Pet Memorial Garden Ideas: Beautiful Ways to Honour Your Beloved Companion

For most of us, pets aren't "just animals." They're the ones who greet us at the gate every single day, who sit with us through hard days without needing to be asked, and who leave a space behind that nothing else quite fills. When that space opens up, finding a way to honour them — somewhere you can see every day — often brings real comfort.

A pet memorial in the garden does exactly that. It's a permanent, peaceful way to keep your companion close, in the place they probably loved most: outside, in the sun, near the back door they used to wait at.

If you're looking for ideas, here's everything you need to know about creating a lasting tribute to your pet.

Why a Garden Memorial Helps With Grief

Grief experts often talk about the importance of "continuing bonds" — small, tangible ways of staying connected to someone (or something) you've lost. A memorial in the garden gives grief somewhere to land. Instead of a box in a cupboard, it's a quiet, everyday reminder: a place you walk past and smile, rather than a memory you have to go looking for.

Many of our customers tell us this directly — that having a memorial somewhere they walk past daily, in a favourite garden spot or by the back door, has become part of how they process the loss. It's a small, steady kind of comfort.

Types of Pet Memorials for the Garden

There's no single "right" way to memorialise a pet — it depends on your garden, your budget, and how personal you want the tribute to be.

Dog Breed Silhouettes

A laser-cut silhouette in your pet's exact breed shape — from over 150 dog breeds — personalised with their name. These work beautifully tucked into garden beds, pots, or along a path, and are a popular choice because the shape alone is instantly recognisable as them.

Celebrate the other furry, feline and feathered friends that added joy to your life, because it's not just dogs that become such a treasured part of the family.

Heart Memorials

A simple, classic option: a steel heart with a paw print (dog, cat, horse, duck, or guinea pig) and your pet's name. Comes on a stake for easy placement as a grave marker or in a favourite garden spot — understated, but unmistakably heartfelt.

Custom Memorials from a Photo

For a one-of-a-kind tribute, we can trace a custom design directly from a photo of your pet — capturing their actual pose, markings, and personality, not just a generic shape. This option suits any animal, not only dogs and cats. As each one is fully custom, there's a design proof stage first, so you can see it before anything is cut.

Why Weathering Steel Is the Right Material for an Outdoor Memorial

We make our memorials from 1.6mm steel — either weathering steel (REDCOR, the Australian-made equivalent of COR-TEN) or mild steel. Weathering steel is the one most customers choose for outdoor memorials, for a simple reason: it's designed to rust on purpose.

The surface forms a natural, protective rust-coloured layer when exposed to the weather, and that layer keeps regenerating over the years. There's no painting, sealing, or maintenance required — it's built to age beautifully and last outdoors for years to come.

As every memorial is cut to order, it will arrive in its raw, grey steel form — not pre-rusted. The rustic patina develops naturally over a couple of weeks outdoors, with full weathering taking a few months. However if you aren't a fan of the rustic look, we also offer powder-coated finishes in satin black or gloss white.

Where to Place a Pet Memorial in the Garden

There's no wrong answer here, but our customers tend to choose one of a few spots:

  • Their favourite sunny spot — many pets had a go-to place to nap in the garden, and that becomes a natural spot for the memorial.
  • As a grave marker, staked directly at the burial site.
  • Near a doorway or path you walk past daily — a gentle "hello" each time you head outside.
  • In a pot near the back door, for renters or smaller gardens.

Personalising Your Pet's Memorial

Every memorial can include your pet's name, and most styles allow a short custom message or their dates. If you're after something extra personal, the custom photo-trace option lets you capture their actual likeness — including ears, tail position, and expression — rather than a generic breed outline.

FAQ's

Will my pet memorial rust and look bad?

No — with weathering steel, rust is the intended finish, not a fault. It forms a protective, rustic patina that stops it corroding further and gives it that classic garden-art look. It arrives raw/grey and develops its rusted colour naturally within a few weeks outdoors.

Can I get a memorial for an animal other than a dog or cat?

Yes. While we have over 150 dog breeds and a dedicated cat range, our custom photo-trace memorials can be created for any animal — including horses, chickens, ducks, and goats.

How long does a custom pet memorial take to make?

Standard designs are typically made and posted within 3–5 business days. Custom designs traced from a photo take a little longer, generally 1–2 weeks, because we create and confirm a design proof with you before anything is cut. Powder-coated finishes add roughly 2 weeks for the coating process.

Is a metal pet memorial suitable for outdoors all year round?

Yes — weathering steel is specifically designed for permanent outdoor use in Australian conditions, including rain, sun, and frost, with no maintenance needed.

Can I choose which way my pet's memorial faces?

Yes — memorials are made facing left by default, but you can request right-facing, or even two memorials made to face each other, by leaving a note at checkout.

Do you ship pet memorials across Australia?

Yes, we ship Australia wide from our workshop in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. We also offer pickup if you are local to the Mt Barker area.

A Lasting Tribute, Made With Care

We've made hundreds of these pieces for families across Australia, and we never take that trust lightly. Every memorial is handcrafted here in the Adelaide Hills — not mass-produced overseas — because a tribute like this deserves real care, not a shortcut.

If you've recently lost a beloved companion, we'd be honoured to help you create something that keeps their spirit in the garden, exactly where they loved to be.
